Where community empowers public education

As you may know, the Foundation raises money for “extras” that traditional school budgets don’t cover. Those extras help make our schools excellent, spark creativity and allow every student to thrive.

For example, Margo Batha’s Southwest Narratives class at Los Alamos High School utilized a Great Ideas Grant to fund a unique opportunity. The project, Generation to Generation: Learning from Each Other, gave students the opportunity to interview senior citizens in our community. Not only did the students connect with the seniors over a meal, they also captured these special stories with microphones and cameras. For the next few weeks, the Southwest Narratives class worked on editing and piecing the content together into a video where their new acquaintances’ stories will remain.

On November 14, the group held a wrap part at the senior center with their shared a holiday lunch with their new friends and debuted their finished videos.

Below you will find the grateful attitude these students left with and what the project meant to them. The Foundation is fortunate to fund such projects and will continue to do so. With community support from people like you we can fund professional development, purchase classroom supplies and resources, give grants, award scholarships and support staff appreciation efforts.

As we close out the year, we invite you to continue investing with us in our schools and community. Your year-end gift will allow us to support innovative ideas and creative approaches to teaching that benefit every student. Thank you for considering a donation to LAPS Foundation to make an immediate impact in classrooms!

“The project has been a game changer for kids. They have made friends with their elders and I am still glowing from the experience.”
